Whether you are taking a road trip or a long flight, these tips are sure to keep you entertained. After all, the journey to and from often makes up a large chunk of your holiday so you may as well enjoy!

I don’t know how I ever used to live without podcasts! Especially in long car journeys when you can’t exactly watch a film, and the radio either keeps cutting in and out or just is not cutting it in terms of your interests. The best part is that they are FREE on the podcast app on your iPhone. There are a zillion podcasts to choose from and I am sure you will find one that interests you, but here are my two ALL TIME favourites:

  1. My Favorite Murder
  2. My Dad Wrote a Porno

Hold the judgement, please! Seeing these both written down one after the other is starting to make me realise how odd my interests are… and how bad they sound. BUT SERIOUSLY, these are both so funny and entertaining. No, FOR REAL, let me explain!

My Favourite Murder

This is a podcast hosted by two female comedians who will have you in fits of laughter. They are incredibly real and unapologetically themselves. They are not afraid to admit that murder fascinates/horrifies them. They take it in turns to tell the tales of true crime: serial killers, crimes of passion, survival stories, and so on. These stories are, of course, gripping and exhilarating and very often horrifying. However, it is much more than that.

Hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark bring a surprising and undeniable sense of humour to a grim topic, making this podcast so addicting and interesting. It’s not all as dark as it sounds; they end every episode on a positive with a segment they call ‘fucking hooray’ where they each share something that makes them happy. These hosts also deserve so much credit for their respect to cultural issues and the way they raise awareness for SO MANY IMPORTANT TOPICS! I am a true murderino, as the fans of the podcasts say, and after listening to just one episode, I think you will be, too!

My Dad Wrote a Porno

Hosted by Jamie Morton, James Cooper, and Alice Levine, this is a British podcast that is about exactly what the title tells you. Jamie Morton’s father (pen name: “Rocky”) has written an amateur erotic novel. Morton is slightly mortified upon discovering this, but he knows the material is too good to keep from the world. Each episode, he reads out one chapter of this poorly written (punctuation mistakes and all), hilariously graphic, and so NOT sexy porno series while his friends chime in with hilarious commentary. Rocky from time to time gets the modern ‘sexy’ lingo confused, for example, which will have you in fits of laughter.

I am not sure how to sell this one, honestly, but it is literally a dad who was trying to be sexy and really missed the mark. It is laugh-out-loud funny and will entertain you for hours.

Audio Books

Audio books are the laziest way of reading ever, and I love them! Also, MASSIVE PERK: you can often rent audio books for FREE from your local library. Otherwise, you can sign up for a subscription to ‘audible’ on amazon and access endless audiobooks, earning free credits every month.

My recommendation is the Harry Potter series. It is so easy and entertaining to get mentally lost in the wizarding world and let time fly by you as you travel onwards. Jim Dale is the BEST narrator, as well, so look for the audio series narrated by him. He does so many voices and they are SO GOOD!

Don’t be downhearted if you don’t like the first audio book you try; the voice of the narrator makes a big difference so try to find a narrator whose voice fits the script!

So, there you have it! You should never be bored on a long commute again. Or course if you fly, you may have the luxury of a selection of films, and reading a real book is always a great way to pass time. Check out my blog here for my favourite book recommendations! Let the journey begin!
